CHAPTER 11

The OGs

The fact that I slept didn’t surprise me, but it did trouble me how easily I found it after the night I’d had. We’d gotten home just shy of four in the morning, each of us breaking rank and agreeing to let everyone get a little rest before we started disseminating the troubling update with the rest of the crew. Grove was of course awake within an hour or so of me getting back, and I hated myself for being grateful that he couldn’t hear, because without his disability, I knew the man would wake up every time I came clamoring in like a drunken sailor on a mid-tour leave. Max rustled awake and thumped out of bed the way a heavy old dog does, with my own heavy ass following suit. After feeding him, I push into a shirt, yawn into a coffee, and shoulder open the door at the back of my barren apartment.

The door that led into the sprawling back room of our office at Full Circle Protection, the one that housed my workshop tinkering station and our own supernatural safe room. It was also where we trained and sparred. It had been almost a year since I’d been here, and while I wasn’t taken aback exactly, I did immediately recognize how foreign this once familiar place felt. I’d picked up on a dozen differences almost immediately. Upgraded computers had a brand-new sheen, the wooden weaponry displayed now had a series of staffs added to it – telling me Grove had either coaxed Kaycee to come down here for some training, or the half-elf did so at her own behest to help cheer my partner up. Some monitor screens tucked into each respective corner that watched not only the front and back of our shop but several key vantage points throughout the neighborhood were a nice addition. Luckily, by the time I dragged my feet across the high school wrestling mat that once gave us ringworm because we’d foolishly not washed it before our first use, I began to settle. If I was ever going to acknowledge a strength of mine without a self-deprecating zinger immediately following up a self-compliment it would be my adaptability.

I paused short of dropping into one of the chairs when I heard Grove coming back from the gym. I hoisted my coffee mug up to him in a wordless salutation. The hyper-observant warrior had nearly dismissed it with a nod before catching my mug-holding hand. From there he glanced at a few other spots I was sure sported fresh bruising and light blemishing from last night’s skirmish. Without much prompting, I brought him up to speed on everything that happened last night verbally, getting used to the practice of facing him directly, and mindful of every enunciation.

How’d you track down this Thomas guy?

Retelling the story had me susceptible to losing myself in thought about it, but when the stone-still soldier suddenly moved, it rattled me enough to keep that from happening.
